One Little, Two Little, Three Little Indians

One Little, Two Little, Three Little Indians
Mrs. Paula Vorne
teacher

1st grade students got visitors from the Oulu University. Four teacher students came to keep them an exciting day teach the 1st graders Indian skills. At first students learned how to make smoke signals with the big shade. Then it was time to learn for example crawling, sneaking, climbing, balancing and throwing on an obstacle course. All of the students learned these important skills they need to become a real Indian.

After the obstacle course the lessons continued and students heard Indian music, saw a lot of pictures of different kind of Indians and got a lot of knowledge on how Indians used to live, what kind of habitations they had and finally they made themselves their own Indian headpiece. All the students got a diploma for taking part to this Indian day.  The students really enjoyed the day and learned a lot about Indians and their way of living!

We want MORE

Teachers learning new

Today some of our teachers trained to use a new M.O.R.E (Mobile Multimodal Recording System) with the help of Learn Lab from the University of Oulu.

Mr. Seppo Laukka, Adjunct Professor and Mr. Antti Siipo, laboratory technician taught us the technical use.

The system consists of a  LadyBug 360 camera, wireless microphones, A/D converter, computer and software to store and edit video and audio clips.

The purpose of the system is to observe students in the classroom and record audio and video either individually or in common. The 360 camera and software allows the teacher or the researcher to zoom any target recorded afterwards and follow one or more students.

During the session teachers found out many opportunities to use the system. Group discussion in co-operative learning, conversation in language learning, music lessons and student centered learning overall. It is almost impossible to get in the conversation going on in many simultaneous groups. The information teacher get afterwards is valuable in evaluation, improving learning results and of course making your own working methods better.

We are looking forward to see the real benefits after using the system longer. The first experiences are very promising.

Here's a short clip taken with the system. It looks like an ordninary video but it has been edited with the sofware and zoomed to the persons speaking. You can also make a flash version where you can zoom, move 360 and pick your area of interest while watching.

Business Fair at Patamäki

Business Fair at Patamäki

The entrepreneurship project around Kodu-games ended today at Patamäki. The companies together with the corporation had organized a business fair event where every company had a stand together with the subsidiaries.

All the important stakeholders were invited to participate to find what is hot in Kodu-games. You could see business mentors, parents, people from other schools and of course students from our school wandering around the tables asking questions from the company staff. The side products were a hit and companies made a lot of business deals out of them. The visitors were satisfied for what they got and they also gave an excellent feedback about the students representing companies. After the round the visitors were invited to VIP-lounge where they were served coffee, cake and beverages by the hosts.

The learning journey together with teachers and students from the 1-4th grades was amazing. We learned a lot of co-operating, negotiating skills, game technology and programming, business thinking, Office tools (OneNote, Excell, Word, Publisher, PowerPoint), communicating via Skype and organizing things. The survey results to students and parents gave us a message that we are on a right track on the way to the future skills and mandate to go on.

At the end I would like to thank students for hard working and commitment, teachers for guiding and enthusiasm and business mentors for inspiring and helping. Be proud of your talent!
